Curated Caribbean Picks: Top Discoveries
Black in the Game
Black in the Game is an exhibition at the Score Gallery in Manchester celebrating the profound impact of African and Caribbean communities on English football.
Co-curated with the Black heritage community, it showcases untold stories of pioneers and ground-breakers, from Premier League stars to grassroots heroes and officials. Featuring iconic objects on display for the first time, it’s a powerful tribute to the figures changing the game on and off the pitch.
The exhibition closes on 8th March.
International Women’s Day: Five-Course Charity Lunch
Celebrate International Women’s Day at Cavita on the 8 March, with a one-off collaborative feast from five trailblazing female chefs. This immersive lunch brings together Adriana Cavita, Ayesha Kalaji, Keshia Sakarah (author of Caribe: A Caribbean Cookbook with History), Maria Bradford, and Sabrina Gidda to showcase global heritage through contemporary culinary storytelling.
The afternoon begins with a live Q&A hosted by Justine Murphy, followed by a unique five-course menu where each chef presents a dish inspired by their roots.
All profits will be donated to Refuge, supporting women and children affected by domestic abuse.
Candle Making Workshop with Caribbean Lunch
Female founders, Tribal Unicorn and Afrobbean Kitchen have teamed up to bring you an intimate candle-making class on 8 March at Afrobbean Kitchen, where you’ll blend and pour your own luxury candle followed by a 2-course Caribbean lunch with cake and a rum punch or mocktail to celebrate International Women’s Day.
Black British Book Festival at The London Book Fair
Join the Black British Book Festival at The London Book Fair on the 10, 11 & 12 March in London Olympia.

Jamaica Love
Jamaica Love returns to Alexandra Palace Theatre on the 14 - 15 March (Mother's Day Weekend). Nominated for Best Musical Production (Black Theatre Awards), this powerful show celebrates the 78th anniversary of Windrush through the evolution of ska, rock-steady, and reggae.
Featuring reggae legend John McLean and a live band.
The Stitch Festival
I’m so excited to share that I’ll be exhibiting at The Stitch Festival for the very first time, from 19th - 20th March!
If you’re a modern maker who loves embroidery, crochet, knitting, cross stitch, dressmaking or any other contemporary crafts, this is a must-visit event. This is also especially exciting for me as I’ll be showcasing my debut book, Raffia Embroidery, alongside raffia embroidery kits and supplies in The Indie Edit section of the show.

Staying in?
We get it! Sometimes you may not want to go out so here's a few things you can do at home too.
Take up a new hobby: Caribbean Style at Home
If you’re looking to bring a bit of the islands into your day-to-day, you don’t need a plane ticket and you don't even need to leave your home!
Here are a few ways to get creative and connected from your own living room:
-
Master Raffia Embroidery
Those of you who have been following my journey will know that I have just released my new book, published by Search Press. I'm super proud of it and I hope it encourages more people to take up Raffia Embroidery. It’s the perfect way to slow down, work a natural fibre, and create beautiful, island-inspired designs that bring some warmth to your home.
-
Grow a "Kitchen Garden" on your Windowsill.
You don't need a huge backyard to grow Caribbean staples. Try planting some thyme, spring onions (scallion) or even a scotch bonnet in a sunny spot. There’s nothing more satisfying than seasoning your Sunday dinner with herbs you’ve grown yourself. I'm definitely not a gardening expert, so start with this article from British Garden Centres and enjoy doing further research to learn more.
-
Mix Up a Tropical Mocktail or Cocktail
Experiment with flavours like sorrel, ginger, and lime. If you're stuck for recipes you can have a look at my blog where I have a recipe for Caribbean rum punch, sorrel, a passionfruit mojito and a tropical smoothie.
Catch up with Sewing Street
Earlier this month I got to showcase my new book on Sewing Street.
On the show, I introduced the core technique featured in the book, talked about my design inspiration, and showed how raffia can be used to create bold, textured embroidery. So if you're interested in having a go at Raffia Embroidery this is a great place to start.
Caribbean Taste of the Month

Just the thought of it is making me hungry! Taste the menu for real at Jumbi's (Unit 4.1, Copeland Park, 133 Copeland Rd, London SE15 3SN)

Curated Caribbean discoveries from the last edition that are still worth checking out!

We also featured The Good Front Room, which is Chef Dom's latest adventure in the Kitchen - its now in full swing so if you're looking for somewhere to take mum this Mother's Day we may have saved you a Google search - you're welcome!

Ways to celebrate Mother's Day
Mother’s Day is about more than just a date on the calendar, it’s a moment to pause and acknowledge the incredible women who ground us. Whether it’s your biological mother, a grandmother, an auntie, or a "bonus mum" who stepped in when you needed it most.
Mothering Sunday is for the women who offer a listening ear and a heart you can always trust.
In many Caribbean households, "Mother" is a title earned through love and labour, celebrating the matriarchs who keep traditions alive, from the Sunday dinner table to the wisdom passed down through generations.
We also recognise that this day can carry a heavy heart. If you are navigating loss, remember today can also be a day to focus on them and to honor their legacy.
- Light a candle
- Visit a favourite spot
- Cook that one dish that always reminds you of them
Their spirit lives on in the memories you have of them.
If you intend of celebrating Mother's Day we have put together a little list of ideas to create happy memories this Mother's Day.
Make your mum a sweet treat
